My Pet Has Diarrhoea – Should I Be Concerned?

Diarrhoea in pets is a common issue, but it can range from a mild, short-lived problem to a symptom of a more serious health condition. At Oathall Vets, we can help determine whether your pet needs treatment.

When to Worry

If your pet has diarrhoea that is persistent, watery, contains blood or mucus, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as vomiting or lethargy, it’s time to call us.

Common Causes of Diarrhoea:

  • Dietary changes or eating something unusual
  • Parasites or infections
  • Food intolerance
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Underlying health issues
  • Ingestion of toxins or foreign bodies

What to Look Out For:

  • Diarrhoea lasting more than 24–48 hours
  • Blood in stools or black, tarry stools
  • Lethargy, vomiting, or signs of pain
  • Dehydration (sunken eyes, dry gums, poor skin elasticity)

What You Can Do:

  • Withhold food for a few hours (not water), then offer a bland diet such as boiled chicken and rice
  • Keep fresh water available at all times
  • Monitor for any changes or worsening symptoms
  • Call Oathall Vets for personalised advice and next steps
