My Pet is Bleeding – What You Should Do

If your pet is bleeding, it can be frightening and stressful. At Oathall Vets, we’re here to help you take the right steps to ensure your pet gets the care they need quickly and safely.

Is It an Emergency?

Any bleeding that doesn’t stop quickly and is profuse, should be considered an emergency. If your pet has been in an accident, had a fall, or is bleeding from a wound, contact us immediately.

Common Causes of Bleeding:

  • Cuts or puncture wounds (e.g. from fights or sharp objects)
  • Internal injuries (especially after trauma)
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bleeding from the mouth or gums
  • Bleeding from the back end (rectum or vulva)

What to Do:

  1. Stay calm – pets can sense stress.
  1. Apply pressure with a clean cloth or bandage to visible wounds.
  1. Don’t use human antiseptics or bandages unless advised.
  1. Prevent licking or scratching of the area.
  1. Call Oathall Vets immediately – we’ll advise you on whether emergency treatment is needed and how to transport your pet safely.
