Are Human Painkillers Safe for Pets?

If your pet is straining or unable to pass urine or faeces, it could signal a serious medical problem. At Oathall Vets, we treat these signs as potential emergencies.

Warning Signs:

  • Frequent squatting with no result
  • Vocalising in pain while trying to go
  • Licking the genital area excessively
  • Bloated or hard abdomen
  • Blood in urine or stools
  • Vomiting or lethargy

Potential Causes:

  • Urinary tract infection or blockage (especially in male cats)
  • Constipation or impacted bowels
  • Anal gland issues
  • Bladder stones
  • Neurological conditions

Some of these issues – especially urinary blockage – are life-threatening if not treated quickly.

What to Do:

  • Don’t delay – call us as soon as you notice straining or distress
  • Don’t try home remedies and don’t give human laxatives
  • Monitor for other signs like vomiting or reduced appetite
