Neutering Your Dog
Neutering (spaying or castrating) is a common procedure with many potential benefits — but it’s not a one-size-fits-all decision. At Oathall Vets, we understand that every dog is unique, and we’ll work with you to decide the best course of action based on your dog’s breed, age, health, and lifestyle.
What Is Neutering?
- Males (castration): Removal of the testicles.
- Females (spaying): Removal of the ovaries and uterus.
Why Consider Neutering?
Many owners choose to neuter their dogs for:
- Reduced risk of certain cancers (testicular, mammary)
- Avoidance of unplanned litters
- Behavioural benefits (less roaming, marking, or mounting)
- Hormone-related health issues
However, neutering is an individual decision. Our experienced vets at Oathall Vets will talk you through the pros and cons, and help you decide what’s right for your pet.
When Is the Right Time?
- Male dogs: From around 6 months, but timing can vary depending on breed.
- Female dogs: Often recommended after the first season or at 6+ months, depending on the breed.
What to Expect
At Oathall Vets, your dog will be cared for by experienced veterinary surgeons and monitored closely before, during, and after surgery. We provide full pre-op and post-op advice, pain relief, and follow-up checks.
Laparoscopic (keyhole) spays- At Oathall Vets, we’re proud to offer laparoscopic spays as an alternative to traditional surgery. Laparascopic spays are minimally invasive surgical procedures used to neuter female dogs. Instead of a traditional open surgery, this technique uses a small camera (laparoscope) and instruments inserted through two or three tiny incisions in the abdomen. Only the ovaries are removed (ovariectomy), rather than both the ovaries and uterus. We’d be happy to talk you through both options so you can make the best choice for your dog.
