Many common houseplants and garden plants are toxic to cats, including lilies, aloe vera, and sago palms. If your cat eats a potentially poisonous plant, call us immediately.
Cats are curious creatures, and sometimes this curiosity leads them to chew on houseplants or garden greenery. Sadly, many common plants are toxic to cats — some even fatally so. Here’s what every cat owner should know.
Plants That Are Toxic to Cats:
- Lilies (ALL types: peace, tiger, stargazer, Easter) – Extremely toxic; can cause acute kidney failure from even tiny amounts.
- Aloe Vera – Can cause vomiting, lethargy, and diarrhoea.
- Pothos (Devil’s Ivy) – Irritates mouth and stomach.
- Sago Palm – Can cause liver failure.
- Dieffenbachia (Dumb Cane) – Can cause burning and swelling in the mouth.
- Autumn Crocus – Causes severe stomach upset, kidney/liver damage.
- Yew Tree – Toxic to many animals; even a small amount can be fatal.
Indoor Cats & Houseplants
Even if your cat stays indoors, houseplants can pose a risk. Always research new plants before bringing them home and consider using cat-safe alternatives like:
- Spider plant
- Catnip or cat grass
If You’re Unsure:
- Snap a photo of the plant.
- Remove your cat from the area.
- Call Oathall Vets or an emergency service immediately.
Cats often show signs such as vomiting, drooling, lethargy, or seizures after ingesting something toxic. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear — early treatment is vital.
