Rabbits love to graze, which makes them especially vulnerable to toxic plants in the garden or home. While they instinctively avoid many harmful plants, they don’t always get it right — so knowing what’s unsafe is key.
Plants Harmful to Rabbits include:
- Foxglove – Toxic to the heart and nervous system.
- Buttercups – Cause drooling, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea.
- Daffodils – Particularly the bulb; can be very toxic.
- Tulips and Hyacinths – Contain irritants that affect the stomach.
- Ivy – All parts are toxic.
- Lily of the Valley – Toxic to many species, including rabbits.
- Tomato Leaves and Vines – leaves and stems are poisonous.
Safe Grazing Tips:
- Only allow access to secured outdoor runs where you’ve checked for poisonous plants.
- Avoid giving clippings or plants unless you’re certain they’re safe.
- Common rabbit-safe options include dandelion leaves, plantain, bramble, and chickweed.
What If You’re Unsure?
- Take a photo of the plant in question.
- Remove access and call Oathall Vets for advice.
- Rabbits can go downhill quickly if they ingest something toxic — it’s always best to act fast.
